In April 1974, a series of aircraft tests was performed to evaluate the usefulness of retransmitted navigational aid signals (NAVAIDS) for measuring winds beneath flight level. Specifically, the OMEGA and LORAN signals were the NAVAID signals investigated. The use of LORAN signals was found to provide better than 1 mps accuracy when 2 min of data were used in the computation. For the OMEGA signals, the accuracy was found to be 1-1/2 mps for a 3-min data interval. In these tests, the 2- and 3-min intervals represent approximately 2000 and 3000 ft intervals of altitude due to motion of sounding instrument.
