- Summary
-
A two part water quality survey of the Little Turkey River basin in northeast Iowa was conducted during January and September 1979. Water samples were collected from eleven locations in order to assess the winter and summer water quality of the Little Turkey River. Results of the winter and summer surveys indicated that the water quality of the Little Turkey River was good. Two violations of the Iowa water quality standard for fecal coliform bacteria were noted during the September sampling. The violation at Station 2 (on the upper reach of the Little Turkey River) was probably due to cattle in surrounding pastures , while the violation at Station 4A (immediately downstream from Waucoma) was possibly due to seepage of domestic wastes from septic tanks and unsewered houses in Waucoma, which has no existing municipal wastewater treatment facility. The benthic macroinvertebrate community of the Little Turkey River basin reflected the good water quality , and represented ( especially i n the downstream portion of the Little Turkey River) one of the healthiest , most diverse communities found by the University Hygienic Laboratory in owa.
