A water quality study of the West Fork Des Moines River was performed on 13, 14 February 1979. The purpose of the survey was to assess the impact of several point source waste discharges on the receiving stream during winter conditions. Compared to previous studies, data from the present survey indicates an overall improvement i n winter water quality of the West Fork Des Moines River. The most notable improvement in water quality was observed downstream from Estherville and may be attributed to a higher quality discharge from its new wastewater treatment plant. In general, most water quality parameters were in expected ranges for winter conditions. Dissolved oxygen samples collected over a twenty-four hour period varied only slightly, demonstrating the impact heavy ice and snow cover has on dissolved oxygen. Compliance sampling of several wastewater treatment plants demonstrated that the municipalities of West Bend and Rolfe were not in compliance with their discharge limitations.
