Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 152
Origin: Only a few texts are dated, ranging from 8th of Rajab 995 / ca. 14 June 1587 [1-4?] to Dhū al-Qaʻdah 1000 / Aug. 1592 [5]. Paper suggests similar dating for transcription of final works.
Former shelfmark: British Museum, London "No. 44 Tracts on Traditions, etc."
Binding: Composite cover with upper and lower boards mismatched; pasteboards covered in light brown (upper cover) and dark red-brown leathers (lower cover and envelope flap, likely replacements) with still another light brown leather over spine, fore edge flap and board edges of lower cover (perhaps to conceal a trim to fit this text block) as well as used for hinges ; Type II binding (with flap); board lining of upper cover in now pale blue laid paper, board lining of lower cover (and interior of envelope flap) in marbled paper (mainly in pink and blue); upper cover carries lovely blind-stamped mandorla (NSv 1 Déroche class.) and tooled border with simple cornerpieces; lower cover carries smaller blind-stamped mandorla (OSh 3 Déroche class.) and pendants (repeated on envelope flap); fore-edge flap carries label "بركوى مرحومك حديث اربعين ..." ; very tightly bound with sewing difficult to examine; worked chevron endbands in dark gray [or brown] and yellow, quite good condition; overall in fair condition with much abrasion to upper cover, apparent loss of lower cover though now replaced (lower cover and flap likely recycled cover), repairs at edges of lower cover (perhaps following trimming), etc.
Support: European laid paper of two main types; opening type (through p.60) with 11 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 27-28 mm. apart (horizontal), watermark of figure / angel in circle with four-lobed leaf above (see p.12, 14, 44, etc.) and countermark of "G Z" (resembling "G 3") under three-lobed leaf (see p.16, etc.); second type (from p.61 nearly to close) with roughly 7 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 28-30 mm. apart (horizontal), watermark of anchor in circle with six-pointed star above (see p.70, 72, etc.) and countermark of "H S" under trefoil (see p.64, 80, etc.), compare nos. 1758-1785 (dated 1563-1585) in Mošin, Anchor watermarks; all quite sturdy, cream in color, second type slightly thicker and very well-burnished.
Decoration: First text has gold rule borders, also section dividers and overlines rubricated.
Script: Naskh and nastaʻlīq (talik); variety of hands; some vocalization.
Layout: Varies from text to text; from 18-25 lines per page; frame-ruled (impression of misṭarah is most evident).
Collation: i, V+1 (11), 2 V (31), IV+1 (40), 4 V (80), IV+1 (89), IV (97), II+2 (103); catchwords present; middle of the quire mark in the form of the khamsah al-ghubārīyah (resembling the Hindu-Arabic numeral ٦) in the upper corner of the right-hand leaf (occasionally also the left-hand) beginning with fol. 6b; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during cataloguing.
Colophon: [1-4?] "...
