520 ‡aWhen an elastically supported circular cylinder is brought into steady fluid flow, flutter motions occur when it is subjected to flow velocities which exceed a certain critical velocity. The flow-induced vibrations can be reduced by modifying the surface of the cylinder. This report discusses the effects of 21 surface modifications on the flow-induced vibrations. It is seen that surface modifications can reduce the amplitudes of the flutter motions.
