Brief summaries of the natural environments of the Mars, Venus, Moon and interplanetary space are presented. The primary induced environmental stresses associated with thermal radiation; cosmic atomic and subatomic radiation; meteoroid particles; vibration, shock and acceleration; and low pressure are described for operation near the above bodies including range of anticipated values and methods of simulation. Additional simulation techniques associated with temperatue, heat flux and atmospheric composition are discussed. An environmental test philosophy and a summary of heat transfer characteristics of high speed vehicles are included. Important areas not covered in this report are combined induced environments associated with atmospheric entry (the subject of a subsequent report) and biological effects and nuclear reaction radiations (not included in this contract).
