- Note
-
Original publisher's machine stamped binding of green cloth boards with six evenly spaced horizontal gilt leaves on both boards connected by horizontal stems running across the spine, gilt lettered spines and gilt page edges at the top edge of the text block. The leaves are stylized milkweed leaves, a reference to the native plant frequently mentioned in Thoreau's writings.
Thirty-five years after Thoreau's death, Houghton Mifflin issued this two-volume "Holiday Edition" of Walden with original illustrations, engravings, daguerreotypes, and period photographs.
Binding designed by Sarah Wyman Whitman.
Holiday edition.
