The "Pourtraictz de plusieurs hommes illustres qui ont flory en France depuis lan 1500" were engraved by Léonard Gaultier on a single sheet, published by Jean Le Clerc around 1600; see BN.
Ports. of the popes preceded by 2 unsigned engraved images (Christ and Mary).
Title leaf for the XII sibyls engraved by Petrus Firens and printed by Jean Le Clerc. The sibyls are preceded by 3 additional images engraved by Thomas de Leu (Christ, Mary, Agnus Dei).
The 290 leaves are mostly of double thickness, composed of two single sheets pasted together. The letterpress title is mounted in an oval opening cut in an etched border signed by M. Merian. The title of each series is similarly mounted in an oval opening cut in a woodcut cartouche (25.3 x 19 cm.). Text sheets and the 2030 ports. are mounted on both sides of the leaves over rectangular openings cut within borders of printer's ornaments.
Despite t.p. date of 1622, the present vol. must have been compiled somewhat later. The series devoted to the Persian shahs concludes with Ismael III, called the successor of Abbas I, who died in 1629. Abbas was actually succeded by Safi I, so this entry is not reliable, but a date later than 1622 is confirmed by the series of kings of England. It ends with Charles I, described as reigning in 1627.
The "Chronologie collée" was sold in sheets, and the biographical texts and engraved ports. were assembled by the purchaser. The present vol. consists of 20 series of ports. followed by a 43-page historical conspectus entitled Sommaire des temps.
