- Note
-
The printer's device on the t.p. (a horse and tower) appears as fig. 224 in G. Zappella, Marche dei tipografi degli editori italiani del cinquecento. But it is there assigned to Sebastiano and Giovanni dalle Donne at Verona, rather than to a printer at Venice; and the small cartouche at the base, which in the present work contains the initials P.Z.F., is there blank. Zappella's fig. 225, however, depicts a different device with horse and tower that includes the initials P.Z.F. It is assigned to Domenico Farri, active in Venice from 1555-1602, suggesting that he is the printer of the present work.
The entrée of Marcantonio Colonna, commander of the papal squadron at the battle of Lepanto, took place on Dec. 4, 1571. The present account is written in the form of a letter to "molto magnifico M. Annibale" from Domenico Tassolo & Baldassare Mariotti. It is dated at Rome on Dec. 4, 1571 at 3 in the morning.
