‡aWhen a mass of gas is contained in two interconnected vessels, it is generally assumed that the pressure is constant throughout the system. Maxwell, Reynolds, Knudsen and others have shown that if a state of equilibrium is defined as that condition where the mass of gas in each container remains unchanged, then, as inequality in the pressures can exist when the temperatures in the two vessels are not the same. This effect has been shown to be of significance when the Knudsen number based on the radius of the interconnecting tube is greater than 0.01.
