Pubblicato nell'ambito delle celebrazioni per i trecento anni dalla nascita di Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717- 1768), questo volume presenta le matrici incise di un testo poco noto di Winckelmann dal titolo Monumenti antichi inediti, molto importante però per la sua influenza sul mondo del Neoclassicismo: per la prima volta, infatti, l'autore inserisce in una sua pubblicazione le immagini grafiche delle opere d'arte che descrive. Conosciuto principalmente per il suo testo Storia dell'arte nell'antichità, Winckelmann è stato fra i più grandi studiosi della cultura classica e teorico della storia dell'arte. Bibliotecario e Soprintendente alle antichità di Roma, nel 1767 pubblica Monumenti antichi inediti di collezioni romane e partenopee. Si tratta di una raccolta descritta e, soprattutto, per la prima volta riccamente illustrata delle antichità, corredata di 208 tavole incise affidate ad artisti di sua fiducia. Tale opera costituisce una visione innovativa del comunicare la Storia dell'Arte. Il volume presenta disegni preparatori, minute, incisioni all'acquaforte ritoccate a bulino e le preziose "matrici" in rame che hanno generato le stampe, oltre a quadri ad olio e bassorilievi antichi in marmo.
Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768) was one of the finest scholars of classical culture, a theorist and the father of the discipline of art history. The 300th anniversary of his birth is being marked by this study of his last published work but one, the Monumenti antichi inediti (Unpublished Monuments of Antiquity). So far little studied because regarded as unfinished, it is fundamental to understand the world of antiquity. In it the author inserted 208 drawings of the Monumenti which he described, with an innovative vision supplementing his descriptions with illustrations. Presented here is the editio princeps of 1767 as well as the reprint issued in Naples in 1820-1823 and that published in Rome in 1821 with Stefano Raffei's addenda, the preparatory manuscripts, twenty matrices of the etchings, fourteen proof prints, portraits of Winckelmann, paintings and archaeological finds, as well as a documentary section. Although his early death prevented Winckelmann from completing this work, his principal followers, from Seroux d'Agincourt to Leopoldo Cicognara, Luigi Rossini and Giovanni Volpato, considered the Monumenti a true model for divulgation of art history.
