Publisher's binding, quarter bound with dark red paper, dark green bubble grained cloth overboards; gilt pictorial cover; spine back strip missing, gatherings exposed, bumped corners, text block split in many places, covers detached, many pages loose at end of book and some in poor condition.
Written in contemporary hand, neat and in ink. Some recipes in other hand in different coloured ink.
Signature of Margaret Blake, Toronto on the fifth unnumbered page. Margaret Blake was the maternal great-grandmother of The Montreal Gazette journalist and author Julian Armstrong. The collection of recipes were written in ink mainly by Margaret Blake in Toronto over a period of 16 years. They include Margaret Blake's recipes as well as some recipes written by friends and family.
Originally published by Dawson Brothers, Montreal, 1872. It was published with blank pages, intended for owners to write their own recipes, using the provided contents note as a guide. Each chapter heading has an appropriate quotation.
