[France] : [Producer not identified], 1770-1771.
- Note
-
Includes information about riots in Portugal, a duel in Angers (France) and news about the king; the poems and songs are chiefly interspersed with the diary entries for 1771 (pages 190-211, 223-237, 246-250).
Full bound dark red morocco, ornately gilt-tooled spine, centerpieces, and borders, marbled endpapers and edges; transparent plastic protective jacket.
Written in a neat hand with sequential pages numbered by hand as found in manuscript; upper edges of pages trimmed for binding, cutting off some text and page numbers; vertical red ruled borders along left and right margins.
Part of the J. Patrick Lee Voltaire Collection acquired by the library in 2013: item number 1271; acquired by Lee from Edmond Rich (see Lee Collection inventory binder for this item number); Armorial bookplate of Newborough on front pastedown with devise: Suaviter in modo, fortiter in re.
Written in manuscript ink on blank unnumbered preliminary page: Ce 16 juillet 1[7]70 par Ducastle à Londres, 1[7]70; and, in a different hand: Manuscrit attribué au Marquis d'Arbannes ... son original (Voyez Bibliographie Barbier); the 1770s on this page could be interpreted as 1570s and at the beginning of the diary the date has been altered with a darker ink to show 1570; the date on the binding is 1570; however, page 3 and numerous other dates on the following pages all clearly show 1770. Traces of a line of text, possibly a title, now washed out and illegible at the head of preliminary page. The Ducastle named may have been a copyist. Although Barbier is mentioned here, no reference was found in either Ouvrages anonymes or Catalogue des livres de la bibloiothéque de feu m. A.-A. Barbier.
Title devised by cataloguer, suggested by binder's spine title.
Manuscript.
