- Summary
-
This letter deals with the first volume of selections of Voltaire's works awaiting reading by a committee at the Académie des belles lettres in order to be approved for publication. The author is impatient for the work to be printed.
- Note
-
In a manila folder with three other letters bought at the same time, separated by acid-free papers.
Manuscript letter in a neat hand but with an illegible signature; the name of the letter-writer, M. DuVerron appears in the lower left corner in the same hand as the text. "No. 8." appears in the upper right corner.
The list accompanying the Lee Collection states that this letter was for Voltaire, but more likely it would have gone to his executors since it is dated 1786 and Voltaire died in 1778.
Part of the J. Patrick Lee Voltaire Collection acquired by the library in 2013: item number 2422 (see Lee Collection inventory binder for this number); according to email correspondence in the binder, this letter was part of the first of two lots of letters sold at auction on eBay in March 2005.
