The diary describes social, family and economic life in Montreal and Stanbridge, Québec from 11 November 1855 to 31 December 1856. There are also many comments about the weather and the author's health.

Marie-Angélique Birranger was the wife of Henri Desrivières (1804-1865), the son of François Amable Desrivières (1764-1830), principal heir of James McGill. Henri Desrivières was a seigneur of Montarville and a political figure in Canada Est who represented Verchères in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in 1841.
Front free endpaper: "From the 9th April 1855 to the 29th October 1856 -- Mrs. Jung has given Caro [that is, the author's daughter, Caroline] 30 music lessons" followed by a list of four 1856 dates with "Mrs. Jung came to-day" and the date 1857 with nothing following
Written in a legible but rather careless hand in blue ink on gray ruled pages; some pages have the year written in the upper left corners; each entry begins with the day of the week and the date (month and number of the day).
