The canvas is devoted to osteology, depicting a complete adult skeleton holding a vertebra in his left hand, and a full skeleton of a fetus directly below. Encircling the skeletons are the following depictions (clockwise): cervical vertebrae, lumbosacral segment, joint surfaces of elbow, hip joint, underside view of the skull, scapula, inferior femoral epiphysis, three views of a knee joint, the atlas and axis, and mandible.

Painting on fine ochre silk (visible cracks and stains) with colours (mostly muted whites and greys) applied using a lavis technique; mounted on a white mat backing with half-moon shape at top, encased in a modern black wood frame with conservation plexiglass. Dimensions including frame: 67 x 200 cm.
