- Summary
-
This report deals with the question of how tiny a crack might be in aluminum alloys of high strength and still be analytically treated by the methods of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM). These techniques are used to obtain estimates of the expected rate of crack extension. Under simple cyclic loadings, LEFM-based predictions are usually within a factor of two from measured experimental results.
