Project Rio Blanco is a joint experiment sponsored by the CER Geonuclear Corporation (CER) of Las Vegas, Nevada and the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) as part of the Plowshare Program. Its purpose is to study the economic and technical feasibility of using multiple underground nuclear explosion to stimulate production of natural gas from deeply buried low productivity gas-bearing formations of the Piceance Basin in Northwestern Colorado.
