Lt. William A. Slacum, United States Navy, as a young man received a commission from President Andrew Jackson to make a special report on the Oregon country. The author was in Oregon from December 22, 1836 to February 10, 1837, and a good part of this time was spent on board the ship Loriot. Report includes descriptions of Fort Vancouver, western headquarters of Hudson's Bay Company; and the Russian port of Fort Ross in northern California.
