- Note
-
Plate 8 (1st sequence) signed: Johannes Stradanus inuent., Heinrich Golss [i.e. Goltzius] fecit, Philippus Galle excude. Four other plates in the first sequence were also engraved by Goltzius (though not signed by him), the remainder by Galle. All in the 2nd sequence were engraved by Galle, and the four in the final sequence are attributed to him. See Hollstein.
The 1st ed. of 1582-83 rather than the 2nd, in which the plates were re-numbered 1-21, or the 3rd, published by Johannes Galle at Antwerp; see Hollstein. First plate in unnumbered final sequence bears the date 1582.
Engraved title with wide border of arms, banners and captives, incorporating the arms of the Medici and of Charles V. Below is dedication to Ambrose of Marienberg. Each of the 20 plates has a two-line Latin legend at foot.
