The first exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water Colours was held in 1805 (see The old Watercolour Society and its founder members, 1804-1812, p. [3]). From 1813-1820, the Society expanded its annual exhibtion to include oil paintings and during those years was known as the Society of Painters in Oil and Water Colours. After the 16th exhibition, held in 1820, the Society resumed admitting only watercolor paintings and reverted to its previous name. In 1881, the Society became the Royal Society of Painters in Water-Colours.
