- Summary
-
Large photographs include an image of George McClellan and his staff at Upton's Hill, near Centreville, Virginia, in 1862; officers of the First Rhode Island regiment, summer 1861, including (then Colonel) Ambrose Burnside; and a photo of General Irvin McDowell and his staff, after the First Battle of Bull Run, July 1861, at Robert E. Lee's ancestral home, the Arlington Mansion.
Photograph album containing 275 photographs: 202 carte-de-visite portraits, 60 carte-de-visite size camp and battlefield scenes from the Civil War (mainly by Mathew Brady and his assistants), and 13 large photographs up to 11 x 10 inches in size. The large photos include albumen prints by Brady and his assistants, and salt prints likely by Egbert Guy Fowx (Fox). Portraits include photos of Lieutenant George Armstrong Custer with Confederate prisoner James Baroll Washington, freed slaves, the Comte de Paris relaxing with officers in military camp, prominent cabinet members and their wives, Lincoln and the First Lady, foreign dignitaries, leading members of Congress, and other Washington notables. War scene photos include images of field operations, headquarters and candid officer photos, gun emplacements, ordnance, artillery and cavalry regiments preparing for battle, and officers and soldiers at work and rest. Also included are early photos of Washington and its surroundings, including fortifications and encampments around the city.
