- Summary
-
A simple device has been developed for indicating the strength of gamma radiation fields. The radiation is detected by a sodium iodide phosphor and photomultiplier combination. A relay-meter operated directly from the photomultiplier anode is used both as an indicator and to operate external alarm circuits. The alarm is usually set to respond to a steady field of 12 milliroentgens per hour, although considerably greater sensitivity can be obtained. Sensitivity to pulses of radiation is decreased as a pulse duration decreases.
