The tale is identical with the first part of a French prose romance: L'histoire du chavalier Berinus. The English abstract of the original has title: The merchant and the rogues. It is a free translation from the abstract by Bricaire de la Dixmerie in "Mélanges tirés d'une grande bibliothèque," Paris, t. VIII, p. 225-227.
