Lives of the emperors of the East compiled by "G.M.D.R.," perhaps Gabriel Michel de la Rochemaillet, who supplied the text for the "hommes illustres" series as published by Le Clerc; see BN.
The "Pourtraictz de plusieurs hommes illustres" were engraved by Léonard Gaultier on a single sheet, published by Jean Le Clerc around 1600; see BN. The preceding entry in BN (Suppl. 280) is for a single sheet of ports. of the 63 kings of France, again engraved by Gaultier and published by Le Clerc in 1600. The title, number and size of the ports. correspond to the 3rd series in the present vol., but it is not noted in BN that they formed part of the Chronologie collé, as is the case for the "Hommes illustres."
The "Chronologie collée" was sold in sheets by merchants not authorized to sell books, and the biographical texts and engraved ports. were assembled by the purchaser. The present copy consists of 6 series from a total of at least 23. The 6 series are illustrated with 767 small engraved ports. (4.8 x 4.5 cm. or less). Text sheets and ports. are mounted on the 144 blank folio leaves of a bound vol. Each series has separate engraved t.p. Title of first series here taken as volume title. Four to six leaves left blank after each series. The last pope to be included is Paul V (reign began 1605) and the last king of France is Henry IV (described as reigning, d. 1610), so the present compilation must date between 1605 and ca. 1610.
