First published by Richard Breton, Paris, 1562; 2nd ed. 1564; 3rd ed. 1567 with 2 printings by Breton, the 2nd showing the word Cancer (A2v) as Cãcer. Library's copy from an additional ed. of 1567 is the 2nd printing with the device of Breton still on the t.p. but with the imprint of Desprez. Authorities compare the drawings with those in a Breton publication of 1565 also with grotesques (Songes drolatiques de Pantagruel). Borders vary on woodcuts of different eds, cf. D4v-D5r.
In the dedication to Prince Henry de Navarre Desprez ("Francoys deserpz") notes that some drawings are after one Capitaine Roberval and a certain Portugais.
Bibliothèque Nationale attributes the 121 woodcuts of figures in costume to François Desprez. Each cut is accompanied by a quatrain in French. Among the costumes are several grotesques. Colas calls it the firstknown work on costume.
