520 ‡aMuch burn research is handicapped by the lack of a method for determining accurately the depth of injury. Histological techniques used for this in the past have been difficult to interpret, particularly for an investigator inexperienced in micropathology. A search was made for staining methods which would provide a striking color contrast between the normal and the burned tissues of the skin. Such techniques have been found and are described. Their usefulness in various research problems is discussed.
