"Two bindings have been designed: one in gold on leather by Mr. John La Farge; the other, an adaptation by Mr. Kenyon Cox of the design of a binding in the Paris Bibliothèque Nationale done for Diane de Poitiers, was modelled in low relief by Mr. Augustus Lukeman and is to be impressed on vellum from the bronze cast"--Colophon.
"Of this book one hundred and twenty-six copies only will be sold or offered for sale ... numbered as follows: no. 1 on vellum; nos. 2 to 11 on imperial Japan; nos. 12 to 126 on papier de Rives [watermarked with the initials of both editors]. Each copy is signed by the printer [Walter Gilliss, of The Gilliss Press] and by the publisher"--Colophon.
"The  photogravures were made and printed by John Andrew & Sons under the personal care of Mr. George T. Andrew." Each with guard tissue. Under many appear the words "Copyright, 1904, by Merrill & Baker," which according to a note on t.p. verso "do not refer to any existing copyright." Others are copyright by Jaccaci. An 18-page full-sized prospectus for the present work was issued by Merrill & Baker in 1904. La Farge and Jaccaci issued an additional prospectus in 1909, entitled Concerning noteworthy paintings in American collections, but no continuation was published.
"The initial letters and head pieces in this volume are from drawings by Mr. Kenyon Cox, engraved on wood by Mr. Henry Wolf."
Comprises pictures from the collections of Mrs. John Lowell Gardner (Isabella Stewart Gardner), John Hay, Alfred Atmore Pope, Albert A. Sprague and Herbert L. Terrell. The collections are described by Martin Conway, Kenyon Cox, John La Farge, and Samuel Isham. Notes on the individual paintings are by contributors listed on p. ix-xi.
