520 3 ‡aA series of experiments was performed to study the crater dimensions produced by two 64-pound HE charges fired in a vertical configuration at varying depths and with varying distances between the charges. Firings were made both simultaneously and with time delays. For simultaneous firings, the dimensions are usually between those of a single charge equivalent in weight to the two charges and those of a single charge equivalent in weight to one of the charges. For long-time-delay firings (5.5 seconds, with the top charge fired first), crater depths are greater than for a single charge equivalent in weight to the two charges for one spacing, while other dimensions fall in the range mentioned above. This increased depth is potentially the most valuable characteristic of the dual-charge technique. Short-time-delay firings (1 to 10 msec) produced depths about the same as and radii and volumes smaller than either simultaneous or long-delay shots.
