Provenance note in ink on front paste-down: "This book originally belonged to the Queen of Naples, it was presented by her to the ill fated Emma Hamilton, the favorite of Lord Nelson, & the wife of Sir W. Hamilton, & [?] many years ambassador at that court. See her private memoirs".
Bound in old full red morocco with gilt-tooled central armorial devices, borders, and inner dentelles. The armorial device on boards belongs to Madeleine de Crequy, Duchesse de la Tremoille.
Imperfect copy; wants leaves F1-2, I1-2, M1, Q1-2, R1, and 2Y2 (containing portrait of Gomberville and emblems 10, 11, 16, 17, 22, 30, 31, and 32 in Part I, and emblem 27 of Part II).
Reissued in 1672 as Theatre moral de la vie humaine; and in English in 1721 as Doctrine of morality; later as Moral virtue delineated.
Parts 1 and 2 each have engraved divisional title pages.
Preliminary materials include "Privilege du Roy", sonnet by Tristan l'Hermite, dedications to the Queen and to Mazarin, portrait of Gomberville.
Produced on request from Cardinal Mazarin for the moral education of the young Louis XIV.
Engraved by Pierre Daret de Cazeneuve after Veen's Q. Horatii Flacii emblemata, Antwerp, 1607 (sides reversed); explanatory text by Marin Le Roy de Gomberville in French; quotations from Horace and other classical authors in Latin.
