- Note
-
The text begins with a Latin inscription by Henning Witte, followed by numerous sermons and orations held in various cities, including sermons and orations by Balthasar Mentzer, Peter Haberkorn and Johann Tacke, the text of George II's last will, the description of the funeral procession with a listing of the participants, a biography of George II, and numerous poems and inscriptions in German and Latin.
Illustrations: 28 double plates (numbered 1-56), with poems in Latin by Johann Tacke printed on versos within elaborated pictorial or floral borders. The double plates are engraved by Johann Schweizer or Adriaen Haelwegh and depict the funeral procession, the display of regalia, the crypt, and portraits of the landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt, including those of George II and his consort, and their successors Louis VI and his consort Maria Elisabeth, engraved by Johann Schweizer after Salomon Duarte, a genealogical table of the house of Hesse-Darmstadt, and a triumphal arch. The plates are followed by 34 numbered double plates, engraved by the same artists signing with initals J.S. and A.H., depicting individual groups of the funeral procession. Plates no. 13 and 14 are folded single leaves (impression size: 13: 18 x 72 cm.).
