Bound in one of the first papier mâché bindings designed to look like carved ebony. Back and front covers have the same 9-panel design. In each of the four corner panels there is a wreath containing the head of an angel, a lion, an eagle or an ox, representing Gospel authors Matthew, Mark, John and Luke. Stylized oak leaves occupy the middle panels of the top, bottom and sides. The central panel shows a sower within a wreath around which two ribbons are wrapped on a staff. "Scripture Parables" appears on the ribbons in raised Gothic letters. Leather spine and hinges. All edges gilt.
"In designing the ornaments to the sacred parables contained in this volume, the illuminator has sought to render them in each instance appropriate. The work of illumination was commenced on the first day of May the year of Our Lord MDCCCXLV and terminated on the tenth day of Febry. MDCCCXLVI. HNH [Henry Noel Humphreys]"--Colophon.
