520 8 ‡bThe title plate depicts an allegorical portrait of Raphael, printed by Kirkall after a drawing by Carlo Maratti. The title is inscribed within a large cartouche which supports an oval portrait of Raphael. The portrait is surrounded by four female allegorical figures and two putti holding attributes.
520 ‡aSuite of reproductive prints after Raphael's drawings depicting the acts of the Apostles. The drawings were commissioned in ca. 1514/1515 by Pope Leo X. Completed in late 1516, they were planned as designs for a set of tapestries intended to cover the lower walls of the Sistine Chapel. Kirkall copied the originals, then in the British royal collection, and produced the plates through an experimental printing process that involved mezzotint, etching and chiaroscuro techniques. The suite consists of a title plate and seven plates reproducing the drawings.
