-
"A collection of thirty-eight old wood cuts, (collected in Germany) illustrative of the New Testament... Printed from the original blocks, in the possession of the publishers. London: Boosey and sons, 1818", contains the same plates in the original size.
Not a Biblia pauperum.
The text is within borders, which are facsimiles of those in a Book of hours, now in the Lambeth Palace Library, printed by T. Kerver, in Paris, 1525.--cf. Note by the printers.
The New York Public Library has the original wood block, from which plate 25 was reproduced in reduced form.
"These blocks came into our possession in 1877."--Note by the printers.
The illustrations are printed from reduced reproductions of wood blocks, considered for a long time to have been made in or about 1540, and now quite definitely proven to be a fraud.--cf. Schreiber, W. L. Handbuch der Holz- und Metallschnitte des XV. Jahrhunderts. Bd. 6, p. 87-89, and Bd. 8, p. 148-152.
