- Note
-
Some MS. notes in the hand of Sangiuliani, apparently for producing plays (e.g. v. 2, for Malvina).
University of Illinois Library bookplate "From the library of Conte Antonio Cavagna Sangiuliani di Gualdana Lazelada di Bereguardo, purchased 1921" on the inside front cover.
Back of last fascicle gives rationale for which plays of Scribe were translated, and why the editor has ended the collection.
Each play has a h.-t. with title and subtitle if present, generic designation, premier information, and collaborators. When different, the original title (often badly transcribed) and generic designation are also indicated in parentheses on the h.-t. Many plays have notes by the translator, some comparing generic designations in French and Italian, and explaining French locutions with no clear translation into Italian. Original French titles supplied from Œuvres completes (Paris: Dentu, 1874-1884).
Published by subscription. Back cover of wrapper has "Condizioni dell'Associazione," of which the first is: "1.o La distribuzione dell'opera si farà per fascicoli di circa dieci fogli di stampa di sedici pagine ciascuno. Ogni volume sarà composto di due fascicoli, ed avrà una vignetta in dono." The remainder of the conditions deal with the edition, financial considerations, and locations.
Fascicle numbers in this record are generally the last fascicle of the group for that volume.
Each volume includes a preliminary leaf with a vignette portraying a scene from one of the plays in it.
V. 1 translated by Luigi Stella ("Ai lettori," p. xv-xvii). In remaining volumes, translator not named on all works, with perhaps Stella for uncredited translations (?).
