Prefatory letter with print signature by the author's great grandson, Vernon D. Fitch, Hyde Park, Vermont, September 23rd, 1897. Addressed to Mrs. S. V. White, of Brooklyn, N. Y., Chairman of the Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument Association who discovered the manuscript and sold it for the benefit of the Association.
