The second part of the library was bought by the Marquis de Paulmy in 1786 and added to his library, which, thus enlarged, contained an unsurpassed collection of French and Italian literary and historical works from 1600-1780. At his death in 1787, his library passed to the Count d'Artois (afterwards Charles X) to whom it had previously been sold. It was confiscated in 1792, and in 1797, by decree of the Directoire, became the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal.
First issued 1784. Part 1, compiled by G. Debure, was published in 3 v., 1783. Sales of some of the Duke's books took place in 1767, 1772, 1777, and 1780. The 1767 catalog (in 2 v.) was compiled by G.F. Debure, cousin of the above named. The 1772, 1777, and 1780 catalogs (each in 1 v.) by G. Debure, compiler of pt. 1, 1783, mentioned above.

Search Tips

Phrase Searching

Use quotes to search an exact phrase: e.g. "occult fiction"

Wildcards

Use * or ? to search for alternate forms of a word. Use * to stand for several characters, and ? for a single character: e.g. optim* will find optimal, optimize or optimum; wom?n will find woman and women.

Boolean Searching

Use AND and OR between words to combine them with Boolean logic: e.g. (heart OR cardiac) AND surgery will find items about heart surgery or cardiac surgery. Boolean terms must be in uppercase.
