Set in the rural English village of Hayslope, this is the story of a love triangle involving Adam Bede, a devout Methodist, and Hetty Sorrel, a passionate young woman who only has eyes for Arthur Donnithorn, an entitled wealthy college student. After a stormy time involving Arthur taking advantage of Hetty, Hetty giving birth to an illegitimate child whom she leaves to die, and Hetty's trial for child murder, Adam realizes the foolishness of his passions and marries Dinah, a woman of similar Christian convictions.
