Letters written by a Turkish spy, who lived five and forty years undiscovered at Paris: giving an impartial account to the Divan at Constantinople, of the most remarkable transactions of Europe: and discovering several intrigues and secrets of the Christian courts (especially of that of France). Continued from the year 1637, to the year 1682. Written originally in Arabick, translated into Italian, from thence into English, and now published with a large historical preface and index to illustrate the whole, by the translator of the first volume.

Main Author: Marana, Giovanni Paolo, 1642-1693.
Related Names: Midgley, Robert 1655?-1723., Bradshaw, William fl. 1700.
Language(s): English ; Italian ; Arabic
Published: London : A. Wilde [etc], 1770.
Edition: The 26th ed.
Subjects: Europe > History > 1648-1789.
Europe > History > 1517-1648.
Note: Authorities agreee that the first part of the work, published in Paris in 1684, was written by Marana. The remainder has been ascribed to several Englishmen, among them Dr. Robert Midgley and William Bradshaw. It is probable however that Midgley simply edited the English translation, made by Bradshaw, of the original Italian manuscript. cf. Gentleman's magazine, 1840-41; Dict. of nat. biog., v. 6, p. 185; v. 37, p. 366.

Search Tips

Phrase Searching

Use quotes to search an exact phrase: e.g. "occult fiction"

Wildcards

Use * or ? to search for alternate forms of a word. Use * to stand for several characters, and ? for a single character: e.g. optim* will find optimal, optimize or optimum; wom?n will find woman and women.

Boolean Searching

Use AND and OR between words to combine them with Boolean logic: e.g. (heart OR cardiac) AND surgery will find items about heart surgery or cardiac surgery. Boolean terms must be in uppercase.
