- Summary
-
Fine copy of Talkhīṣ al-Miftāḥ, the abridgment by al-Qazwīnī, Khaṭīb Dimashq, (d.1338) of the third part of Miftāḥ al-ʻulūm by Yūsuf ibn Abī Bakr al-Sakkākī (d. 626/1229) on rhetoric (ʻilm al-maʻānī wa-al-bayān), followed by an abridgment of al-Qazwīnī's abridgment by Nūr al-Dīn Ḥamzah ibn Durghūd [or Ṭurghūd or Ṭūrghūd] (Nurettin Hamza bin Turgut Aydınî, d.1572), entitled al-Masālik. Contents listing on opening 'title page' (p.1) suggests that these two works were once bound with two additional works, now lacking.
- Note
-
Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 630
Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; paper, etc. suggest 18th century.
Accompanying materials: a. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda -- b. Inventory cataloguing slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas -- c. Slip with notes (paginated pp.81-82).
Former shelfmark: From inner front cover, "IL 59c" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip).
Binding: Pasteboards covered in marbled paper (once in dark blue, salmon, lavender, lime green, etc.) with dark red-brown leather over spine, fore edge flap, and edges/turn-ins (framed binding) ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in untinted laid paper ; sewn in dark pink thread, two stations ; overall in poor condition with significant abrasion, staining, lifting and losses of leather, delamination of boards, upper cover fully detached, etc. ; repairs in tan leather ; housed in box for protection.
Support: European laid paper with 11 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 23 mm. apart (horizontal), and watermarks including grapes (raisin) with crown above (see p.150, 155, etc.), arms in circle with crown above (see p.152, 153, etc.), and name (see p.148, 157, etc.), thin and transluscent though sturdy, well-burnished to glossy, medium cream in color.
Decoration: Simple illuminated headpiece at opening on p.2 consisting of an arrangement of abstract floral forms in gold defining the shape of a triangular piece (or hasp) ; text of incipit and facing page for opening work (pp.2-3) surrounded by gold frame ; thereafter written area surrounded by a red rule-border ; keywords, passages of text being commented upon, sections headings, etc. rubricated ; textual divders in the form of letter hāʼ (or three) in red ; some overlining in red.
Script: Naskh ; elegant Turkish hand ; virtually serifless (though alif of lām-alif ligature resembles ٩), in places fairly vertical and elsewhere with effect of tilt to the left, rounded with curvilinear descenders, pointing in strokes rather than distinct dots, occasional sweeping tails (final yāʼ, qāf, etc.) ; partially vocalized.
Layout: Written in 19 lines per page ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board evident).
Collation: 7 V(70), VI-1 (81) ; almost exclusively quinions ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes one insert and mistakenly skips two pages between p.95 and p.96).
