Summary

Fine copy of the lexicon of select words and phrases, particularly those which occur in the books of tradition and other works relating to law, arranged in alphabetical order. It is a version of the author's al-Muʻrib fī gharīb alfāẓ al-fuqahāʼ and is used extensively as a reference work by scholars of the Ḥanafī madhhab in particular.

Origin: As appears in colophon on p.434, copied by Ḥasan [?] ibn Ghulām ʻAlī [?] al-Najafī with transcription completed 25 Rajab 1110 [ca. 27 January 1699] in Mashhad.

Binding: Pasteboards covered in red leather ; Type II binding (with flap, now with significant losses to fore edge flap) ; board linings in marbled paper (in blue-green, yellow and cream) ; upper and lower covers carry central blind-stamped mandorla (filled with symmetrical vegetal composition, compare Déroche class. OSd) and epigraphic pendants with inscription "يا علي مدد" ; sewn mainly in red thread, two stations, though final gatherings sewn in yellow ; worked chevron endbands in green-blue, yellow, etc. now damaged with only a portion of headband remaining ; overall in poor condition with significant abrasion, staining, lifting and losses of leather and pasteboard, delamination of boards, losses to flap, negative draw in upper cover, etc. ; repair to fore edge flap in tan leather ; housed in box for protection.
Support: non-European (likely Persian or Indian) laid paper with 8 laid lines per cm. (vertical, fairly distinct) and no chains distinctly visible, fairly crisp, thin and transluscent though sturdy, some inclusions, medium cream in color, well-burnished to glossy.
Decoration: Keywords, section headings, notabilia (side-heads) and abbreviation symbols rubricated ; occasional overlining in red ; textual divders in the form inverted commas in red.
Script: Naskh ; elegant Persianate or Iraqi hand ; virtually serifless and quite rounded with curvilinear descenders, rightward descenders tapered, pointing in distinct dots though quite compact, very slight effect of tilt to the left, occasional sweeping tails and extension of horizontal strokes, freely ligatured, etc.
Layout: Written in 21 lines per page ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board evident).
Collation: 27 IV (216), I (218) ; almost exclusively quaternions ; final leaf (following close of text) left blank ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization.
Colophon: "Scribal," triangular, reads "تمت هذه الرسالة بعون الله تعالى وحسن تأييده في مشهد امامنا ومقتدانا علي بن موسى الرضا عليه الف الف التحية والثناء يوم الاثنين خامس وعشرون من شهر رجب المرجب بقلم اقل خلق الله واحوجهم الى رحمة ربه الغني حسن [؟] بن غلام [؟] علي النجفي حامدا مصليا مستغفرا ... سنة ١١١٠"
Explicit: "وقد علمت ما عانيت في التقويم والتثقيف لما وقع في الكتب من الحريف والتصحيف فاقلني عثرتي واستر عورتي وامن روعتي برحمتك يا رحيم وبفضلك يا كريم والحمد لله رب العالمين وصلى الله على محمد واله اجمعين الطيبين الطاهرين"

Ownership statement on 'title page' (p.1) in name of Muḥammad Ibrāhīm ibn Zayn al-ʻĀbidīn al-Naṣīrī al-Ṭūsī (محمد ابراهيم بن زين الدين النصيري الطوسي) accompanied by rectangular seal impression dated 1087 [1676 or 7] ; also on 'title page' (p.1) ownership statement indicating that the book was purchased and transferred from Baghdād to Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥājjī Yūsuf ibn ʻAbd Allāh ibn Dāwūd ibn Muḥammad ibn Muṣliḥ al-Kawwāz al-Shādhilī al-ʻAbbāsī al-Shāfiʻī of Baṣrah, reads "ثم انتقل هذا الكتاب بالشراء الشرعي من بغداد المحروسة الى الفقير الحقير ... احمد بن الحاجي يوسف بن عبد الله بن داوود بن محمد بن مصلح الكواز مأربا والشاذلي طريقة والعباسي نسبا والشافعي مذهبا والبصره مولدا ومسكنا غفر الله لهم ولوالديهم والمسلمين اجمعين مشتراء ١٢ [...؟] م" accompanied [?] by octagonal seal impression ("عبده احمد...") ; notabilia (side-heads) with terms being elucidated in red ; occasional glosses.
