Former shelfmark: "151 T. D. M. [i.e. Tammaro De Marinis]" inscribed in pencil on verso of front flyleaf ; "15/7" inscribed in ink on 'title page' (p.1).
Binding: Heavy pasteboards covered in painted lacquerwork, spine and hinges in dark red brown leather ; Type III binding (without flap) ; two-piece binding (overlapping flanges visible at spine) ; doublures in fine painted lacquerwork of composition evoking book cover design with central mandorla and pendants (filled with flowers and leaves in bronze / gold on a black ground) as well as vegetal border ; upper and lower covers also in fine painted lacquerwork of composition evoking book cover design with central mandorla, pendants and cornerpieces (filled with flowers and leaves in bronze / gold on a dark red ground) surrounded by swirling floral vegetal pattern in bronze / gold ; flyleaves in shell marbled paper (mainly in pink, blue) ; sewn in red and green thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in light green and pink, good condition ; overall in fairly good condition with minor abrasion and losses to lacquerwork and pasteboard, etc. ; binding may be earlier than text block.
Support: European laid paper with 10 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 22-24 mm. apart (horizontal), and watermark of smiling lion guardant passant (see p.8-9, 24-25, etc.) ; creamy, lightly burnished, thin and transluscent though sturdy.
Decoration: Splendid illuminated headpiece (ʻunwān / sarlawḥ) at opening on p.2 consisting of large rectangular panel with gold cartouche carrying section heading in red flanked by light blue pendants and surrounded by swirling arabesque in gold with red, green, yellow, pink, etc. floral accents on a dark blue ground, surmounted by vertically elongated w-shaped piece filled with elaborate floral vegetal design in shades of pink, lavender, blue, green, yellow, etc. on fields of dark blue and gold, all set in a well of heavy gold interlace ; a smaller version of the central headpiece same appears in the margin ; illuminated marginal decoration on incipit and facing page consisting of a swirling vegetal composition in gold with blue accents ; additional exquisite double-page illuminations at openings of Gulistān (p.46-47) and Būstān (p.152-153) ; smaller, simpler illuminated headpieces at section openings ; occasional illuminated accents with arabesque or chī cloud designs appear in triangular panels of the marginal written area ; written area of incipit and facing page set off by gold cloud-bands ; written area (columns within and margin) surrounded by gold frame ; keywords and section headings rubricated.
Script: Nastaʻlīq ; elegant hand ; serifless with effect of words descending to baseline, elongation of horizontal strokes, mainly closed counters, pointing in distinct dots.
Layout: Written in 15 lines per page, with up to 28 lines on the diagonal in the margin ; frame-ruled ; written area occasionally divided to two columns to set off verses.
Collation: 43 IV(344), I (346), i ; almost exclusively quaternions ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals.
Colophon: "Scribal," in Arabic and Persian, reads "وقع الفراق من تسويد هذا الكتاب كليات شيخ سعدى رحمه الله بتاريخ يوم پنجشنبه ششم شهر شعبان المعظم سنه ١٢٩ من الهجرة النبوية المصطفوية عليه السلام بر يد الضعيف النخيف الراجى الى رحمة الملك المتعال محمد رحيم ابن محمد ژریه حفظه الله تعالى من جميع الافات ... انشا الله تعالى"
