Vol. 17-24 include the circulars, reports and documents issued by the editor as commissioner of education (vol. 18 is the American year-book and register for 1869; v. 19, Special report on education in the District of Columbia).

Originally published as American journal of education and college review, edited by Absalom Peters and Henry Barnard. After issuing v. 1, no. 1-2 (Aug. 1855-Jan. 1856), the partnership dissolved, with Peters continuing the original publication, and Barnard establishing the American journal of education, which adopted the volume numbering and pagination of the original.
Vols. 17-24 form the National series. Vols. 26-31 form the International series, v. 1-6.
