- Summary
-
"Carl Van Vechten's first (1922) of seven novels is a comedy-biography of Whiffle, a man who claims to be a writer but who writes nothing. He says his purpose in life is to have no purpose. Travelling between NYC and Europe, Whiffle absorbs the arts and, with Van Vechten as guide, the novel explores the artistic explosions of the period. The fictional Whiffle names Van Vechten as his executor, and he becomes a kind of Saint-Simon or Pepys. The other main character is Edith Dale, a fabulous salonista based on Mabel Dodge -- before she moved to Taos, NM."--goodreads website (cf. https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/1919838)
