Hirokawa Kai's "Record of Things Heard and Seen in Nagasaki" was a seminal work describing a trip he took to Nagasaki. It became a popular source of information about Deshima, the Dutch, the Chinese, and international trade in Nagasaki. It also includes strange tales from abroad. Hirokawa Kai (dates unknown) was a physician in Kyoto who studied Dutch medicine with Yoshio Kōgyū (1724-1800) in Nagasaki.
