The merry devil of Edmonton, first published in 1608, has been variously ascribed to Shakespeare, Thomas Dekker, Thomas Heywood, and others. It has been confused by some authorities with the prose tract (The life and death of the merry devil of Edmonton) entered the same year at Stationers' hall. The tract has been attributed to both Antony and Thomas Brewer.
