- Summary
-
This fourth volume of the author's new history of Portugal contains a few references to the Portuguese Jews, including their internal administration and the growth of the communities due to the influx of refugees from Spain. Pp. 397-399 relate that passions ran high in times of troubles, and that many Christians held the Jews responsible for their suffering. There were rare outbursts of violence, but discrimination intensified. Unprecedented theological polemics denounced the "errors" of Judaism; antisemitic sermons in churches and forced public debates were organized. The Jews were identified with absolute evil, were subject to accusations of deicide, blood libels, and Host profanation, and were deprived of rights.
