The questions which arose in the U.S. Supreme court were whether the plaintiff-in-error, a negro, was a citizen of the United States, in the sense in which that word is used in the Constitution, and whether the U.S. Circuit court had jurisdiction in the above mentioned case. The consitutionality of the missouri compromise act was also brought into question.
