T. S. Arthur was editor of this famous ladies' magazine, which superseded Miss Leslie's Magazine and was christened Ladies' Magazine of Literature, Fashion and the Fine Arts in February, 1844. Arthur was an active editor, writing much material himself, and bringing many of the better known magazinists of the times into his pages. Nathaniel Parker Willis, Park Benjamin, J. G. Percival, and A. J. H. Duganne were occasional contributors, Miss S. A. Hunt furnished sentimental short stories, and Mrs. Elizabeth Ellet sent many translations from the German. Longfellow's "The Village Blacksmith" appeared in the August, 1844 issue. Fashion plates were featured, and other illustrations appeared as well.
