S.R. Crocker founded the Literary World as a help to book buyers. His reviews of literary works were sound, although they lacked the liveliness to give the World popular appeal. In 1877, the ailing Crocker was replaced by the Reverend Edward Abbot. He edited the remaining file with the exception of 1889-95, when N.P. Gilman was in charge. Under Abbot's guidance, Arthur Gilman, Henry C. Lodge, Charles Thwing, and others became correspondents. In the 1880's, French and German contributions were added. The finances of the Literary World failed to gain solvency. It was finally merged into the Critic in 1904. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
